Some things just shouldn’t be crooked… and that includes your smile!

Sept4FlossGetting a straight smile might seem like a luxury. Honestly, who has the time or energy to spend time in braces?  It is something most people, especially adults just don’t want to deal with. The problem is, crooked, crowded, or poorly balanced teeth can affect much more than your smile – they can also affect your overall health and wellbeing. Crowded teeth are harder to clean, and flossing can be a real challenge. All those dirty nooks and crannies can lead to severe oral health issues.

In fact, crooked teeth can:

  • decay more easily because of hard to reach plaque build-up
  • cause chewing, speaking and breathing issues
  • contribute to gum disease
  • advance deterioration of the jawbone
  • lead to headaches and other TMJ disorder problems

And that is nothing to make light of! Straightening your smile is clearly more than cosmetic, it’s good for your health too. That makes the idea of straightening your smile just a little bit more compelling, doesn’t it?

We thought so.

Because orthodontic issues are linked to your health, we recommend that kids have an evaluation for braces early, before their jaws stop growing for maximum orthodontic effectiveness. We offer both traditional orthodontics and less visible options to help adults find their healthiest smile, such as:

  • Invisalign
  • 3M Incognito Braces
  • Radiance Clear Braces
  • Ceramic Braces

As a bonus, your smile gets to look terrific too!

For more information about our orthodontic solutions for both children and adults, please give us a call today. We’d love to help your find your perfect smile!

3M Incognito Braces

The Better Way to Get Straightened Out

I want to straighten my teeth but I don’t want anyone to see my braces. What can I do?

While there are several “clear braces” options on the market, plastic aligners are not your only choice if you need to maintain a professional appearance while correcting your smile or your bite. 3M Incognito Braces are attached to to the back of your teeth instead of the front of your teeth or being worn over the teeth as clear braces are.

What are the benefits of Incognito braces over clear braces?

Clear plastic aligners can be a great choice for certain kinds of orthodontic repair, but they are not always effective for neuromuscular treatment or when major correction is needed. 3M Incognito Braces work just as traditional braces do, without being at all visible. Even clear braces can’t claim that – a clear plastic aligner may not be very noticeable, but it is still visible!

Incognito braces are also firmly attached to your teeth so you never have to worry about losing a costly aligner.

How do 3M Incognito braces work?

While these braces may seem unusual, they work just as quickly and efficiently as traditional braces do. They use wires and brackets, but each bracket is produced individually for you, so you are wearing perfect castings - for a really exclusive mouth. The braces are also made of gold alloy so you will never experience the allergic reactions nickel braces can cause.

How do I care for my Incognito braces?

Because Incognito™ Braces are designed to be extremely flat, hugging your teeth like a glove, they are not only nice to wear, they are very easy to brush. Here’s how to care for your 3M Incognito braces:

  • Brush regularly and thoroughly.
  • Floss regularly. Traditional floss is fine, but there are many products on the market designed to help easily thread floss around the wires.
  • Be sure to continue with your regular dental checkups and visits to the dental hygienist.
  • If you find your tongue wandering to a particular brace or wire, cover up the spot with a bit of dental wax. Just be sure to use your toothbrush and/or a "tree brush" to clean all the wax from your braces.
  • Call your doctor immediately if you feel anything out of place or have concerns about breakage.

If 3M Incognito braces sound like the orthodontic solution you have been looking for, give us a call! We’d be happy to let you know if you are a candidate for treatment.

Dentistry For Your Life

Ramos1At Great Neck & Mid-Island Dental Associates our doctors have seen many patients over their lifetime of practicing. All their patients have different stories as to what has brought them to see our doctor's; from people who have suffered tragic accidents to people who have been dealt a bad hand genetically. Yet, they all have a commonality- they would like to improve their smile so they can become more confident in their life. Stephanie was one of those patients who came to see Dr. Weiner as a young girl. After 10 years, both Dr. Weiner and Dr. Morhaim worked together to transform Stephanie's smile, which started of as imperfect and making it completely flawless. Stephanie was 13 years old when she saw Dr. Eric Weiner, a cosmetic dentist who excels in all fields of dentistry, to see if he could restore her smile. As a young teenager she was embarrassed and not confident with herself been being born with missing congenital lateral incisors (missing 2 front teeth). She sought Dr. Weiner's professional advice because she longed for a sense of relief and some hope. Unfortunately, because she was 13 years old and still growing, Dr. Weiner was not able to place implants until she turned 18.

In the interim, Dr. Weiner created a temporary solution for Stephanie by creating a Maryland Bridge, which allowed for temporary replacement of her missing teeth without affecting her other teeth. This way she was able to go through her teen years more confidently. At the age of 19, Stephanie went back to Dr. Weiner's office to see if she was eligible for dental implants. After a CT Scan was performed it was discovered that the roots of her teeth were perpendicular rather than parallel. Unlike traditional x-rays, CT Scans allows you to examine your teeth as well as your jawbone and sinus cavity. Faced with this roadblock, Dr. Weiner was not able to place implants because Stephanie has to undergo orthodontic treatment in hopes to move the roots of her teeth.

Two years later, Stephanie was able to take her braces off and smile. She was excited to move forward with the process of restoring her smile. Since being born with 2 missing teeth, Stephanie had a lot of bone loss in those 2 areas. Dr. Weiner brought in our Periodontist Dr. Sam Morhaim to perform ridge augmentation to thicken the bone on her jaw line. Dr. Morhaim used the Navigation System to then place the implants to endure proper placement. Dr. Weiner then placed her post crowns and her case was finished!

After nearly ten years, Stephanie is able to now smile confidently. This case was very involved and needed a lot of time and patience. Stephanie still comes to our office for cleanings and check-ups and every time she does she gives our staff a big hug.

Airfloss- Is this the new game changer?

Flossing is a vital part in maintaining good oral hygiene and unfortunately it’s also the part that many of our patients forget or possibly overlook. Studies have shown and continue to prove that flossing daily can help prevent cavities as well as gum disease. In recent years Phillips Sonicare came out with Airfloss that promised consumers to be an easier and more effective alternative to traditional flossing methods. Many patients ask us which method is more superior, so we wanted to weigh in and give you some quick facts about this innovative tool. * Airfloss uses a quick burst of pressurized air in conjunction with droplets of water to clean between teeth.

* It’s easy to use and is rechargeable. You can use it up to 2 weeks between charging.

* Airfloss only reaches the areas between the teeth, where traditional flossing methods allows you to clean between the teeth as well as between the gums.

* You can also add mouthwash to the Airfloss to kill any bacteria.

At Great Neck & Mid-Island Dental Associates our doctor’s and hygienists almost always recommend traditional flossing methods because unlike Airfloss, it allows you to clean the small crevices between your teeth. However, if you are someone who has braces or have an injury or disability such as arthritis the Airfloss is an excellent alternative. If you have questions about flossing techniques or how to maintain your oral hygiene you can always contact our office.

Brace Yourself for the Following Orthodontic Information

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child should be seen by an orthodontist at the first signs of orthodontic problems OR no later than age 7. Through research, it has been shown that interceptive (early) orthodontics is so incredible helpful! What that means is that Orthodontists can intercept a problem before it happens and gets more complicated. That is why it is very important to see an Orthodontist early! An Orthodontist can detect subtle problems with jaw growth and teeth that are first starting to come into the mouth, even when baby teeth are still present.

  • While you might think that your child's teeth look normal, an orthodontist can pick up a problem, before it is obvious.
  • Your child's bite may be okay at this time, but if there are sublet signs present, the bite might have to be monitored. The reason is that if a problem is brewing, your child will be treated at the appropriate time, resulting in fewer problems in the future.
  • We can correct harmful oral habits that might result in a complicated Orthodontic case if not treated early.
  • Some cases are very crowded, and if not treated early with expansion appliances, there might not be enough room for all of their permanent teeth.
  • Improve your child's self esteem if they are unhappy with how their teeth appear.
  • Guide permanent teeth into better positions as they erupt, reducing the amount of time your child will be in braces are indicated.
  • Improve the way their lips meet, thus protecting their upper front permanent teeth.
  • Timely treatment may prevent serious problems from developing resulting in less time in braces and the cases are not as complicated and much more stable.

Oral health care is a very important part to the overall health of your child. If you would like an orthodontic consultation or have any additional questions please feel free to call our office to schedule and appointment with one of our orthodontists

Long Island Cosmetic Dentists Discuss Smile Makeover

cosmetic, dentist, dentistry, general, smile, makeover, long, island, ny A recent study by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) reveals 99.7% of Americans believe that a smile is an important asset. Additionally, 74% of participants feel an unattractive smile could potentially hurt a person’s chances for employment success. Given these statistics, Long Island cosmetic dentists at Great Neck & Mid-Island Dental Associates say choosing the right dental practice for cosmetic procedures is essential to achieving the best results and a confident smile.

The smile makeover is a combination of cosmetic and orthodontic procedures that may include teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, or Invisalign®. With the rise in popularity of reality TV shows and direct-to-consumer cosmetic dentistry marketing, exposure to comprehensive smile makeovers has grown: teeth whitening procedures have increased by 300% in the past five years, porcelain veneers by 250%, and dental bonding by 100% according to a recent study by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). Long Island dentists at Great Neck & Mid-Island Dental Associates say the increase in popularity of smile makeovers creates a need for a more selective and thorough approach to choosing the right dental practice for cosmetic procedures. To achieve the best cosmetic results, they suggest finding an AACD dentist or orthodontist in Long Island with specialized experience.

The AACD study also reports that 99.7% of Americans believe a smile is an important asset. With nearly all Americans placing such an importance on aesthetic appearance, Dr. Arnold Tyrangel, a founding partner of the Great Neck Dental Associates, recommends extensively researching cosmetic dental options before undergoing a procedure. “Proper research ensures that patients are choosing the best options for their individual needs and not rushing into such an important procedure.” He adds that smile makeovers are a significant commitment, as they can give patients a renewed confidence in their self-image and a more positive outlook on life.

Dr. Stephen Dallal, another founding partner of the practice and Accredited AACD member says choosing a dental practice that focuses on personalized and individual care is one of the most important elements to address when considering a smile makeover. He adds that consulting with an experienced and passionate dentist for procedures such as porcelain veneers in Long Island can ensure patients receive the proper treatment and care. “When choosing a cosmetic dentist it is important to consider the experience and additional training of the dentist. A patient should always ask to see before and after photos of similar cases the dentist has performed.”

Don’t worry! There are still plenty of candies that you can eat that will not damage your braces or retainer. Think chocolate!! Any soft – non-sticky – candy such as peanut butter cups, plain M&Ms, Hershey Kisses should be easy for you.
