New York Dentists on Benefits of Laser Dentistry Technology

new york dentists, laser dentistry, great neck cosmetic dentistry Great Neck, NY – Great Neck and Mid-Island Dental Associates, a highly skilled group of Great Neck dentists, operates with the mission of “blending the art and science of dentistry to meet the unique dental health needs of patients.” In their ongoing pursuit to provide patients with state-of-the-art technology, the practice has embraced the use of lasers in a variety of dental treatments ranging from gum disease procedures to cavity care. According to the dentists at Great Neck and Mid-Island Dental Associates, laser dentistry is reshaping the way that both doctors and patients approach dental procedures.

For periodontal treatments, Great Neck and Mid-Island Dental Associates are utilizing laser technology on almost 100% of their patients. The dentists say the lasers are great tools, allowing the removal of tissue and tooth decay without the use of a drill. Using a laser also makes it possible for dentists to perform procedures, which heal 30-40% faster than traditional incisions. In addition, the dentists say they are using lasers to manipulate and reshape bone.

Laser dentistry is a much more conservative form of treatment than traditional methods. Instead of open procedures where the inner gum is exposed, the dentists say laser treatments can reach beneath the surface of the gums to kill off bacteria and even reshape the bone. They add that prior to laser dentistry, this would not have been possible without surgically opening the gums. There are many benefits associated with laser-assisted dental treatments, including significantly less trauma and gum recession with pain reduction of about 80%. Since no incisions are necessary, the dentists say the healing process becomes uneventful because there is virtually no pain, no swelling, and no inflammation after treatment. The dentists at Great Neck and Mid-Island Dental Associates add that patients are healing so quickly that they are no longer delaying or avoiding dental treatments, which in the past have involved much more pain.

For patients concerned about the safety of laser use in dental procedures, Great Neck and Mid-Island Dental Associates say the laser is entirely made up of light, which poses no danger to personal health and does not contain harmful radiation. The dentists add that these lasers are designed to operate at specific wavelengths that are set to target water molecules residing in bacteria and in soft tissue and bone. Great Neck and Mid-Island Dental Associates, a Great Neck cosmetic dentistry practice, say that lasers can also be used to remove any abnormalities found in the mouth, such as canker sores and many different kinds of growths that are often completely healed within a few days.

What are you afraid of?

Do you suffer from anxiety before a dental visit? Do you put off necessary treatment because you are afraid? Don't worry- you're not alone. The American Journal of the American Dental Association has estimated that close to 30 million people have fears of visiting the dentist. At Great Neck and Mid-Island Dental Associates we strive to make each visit as comfortable and worry-free as possible. Below are some helpful tips that can eliminate that fear.

1. Listen To Your Favorite Tunes: Music is a great way to get your mind off your visit. Bring your headphones and an Mp3 player next time you come in and listen to your favorite bands while getting a procedure done. Whether you're listening to Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, or Maroon 5- your visit will surely go by quicker.

2. Who, What, Where, When, Why: For many patients anxiety comes from the "not knowing" and we want to change that. Ask our assistants and hygienists what they're doing, how it will benefit you, and what the outcome will be. Understanding these things will help ease anxiety because you will know what to expect.

3. Make A List: Regardless if you are afraid of needles and drills or have had a bad experience with your previous dentist, we want to know. Create a list of your concerns and bring it with you to your next dental appointment. We encourage all of our patients to voice their fears that way we can work together to minimize stress and make visits more comfortable.

A Patients Dream Come True...

Painless dentistry has received a lot of buzz in the dental community recently and we are excited to share with you what all the chatter has been about! Since our office began treating patients with a laser instead of conventional drill, we have received nothing but positive reviews and ovation. Laser dentistry is transforming our office and how we treat our patients. Typically in conventional dentistry the use of local anesthesia with a needle and shot is usually necessary so that the patient has no pain. The drill that is used typically causes discomfort from the vibration, heat, and pressure. The end result of a simple filling with the use of a drill causes a numb lip, which often restricts eating and speaking until the anesthetic wears off.

Many of our patients who have been treated with the laser have been pleasantly surprised that in fact it truly is painless! The laser that our dentists use is called the Waterlase Er,Cr:YSGG laser made by Biolase. The Waterlase Er,Cr:YSGG uses laser light and a gentle spray of water- that's it!

Laser dentistry is changing the way our patients view dental visits. Just ask our patient Jennifer Murillo who had work performed by our cosmetic dentist, Dr. Weiner. "When I came in as a new patient for a check-up and cleaning I was told I had numerous cavities. Never having a needle at the dentist's office before I was a little apprehensive. Dr. Weiner was very reassuring that everything would be fine, which it was, but as we talked he mentioned he had gone for training to remove cavities using lasers. I was stunned! He told me it would be coming to the office very soon. I had appointments for three weeks in a row to have the cavities removed- one so deep that I was numb from 3:30pm until almost 9pm that night. On my final visit the laser machine had arrived and I had the option to try it. WOW is all I can say!!! No numbing cream, no shot, no nothing. There was no pain during the procedure that I felt at all. My mouth had to stay very wet for the laser, which made me gag a few times (I can't lie). Once the suction was moved to a better location I wasn't filling up with so much water. When the procedure was completed Dr. Weiner told me I could go right then to eat a steak. Hopefully I can stay cavity free from now on, but if not, the laser is definitely the way to go!"

At Great Neck & Mid-Island Dental Associates we pride ourselves in treating patients with the most up to date technology in our industry. We are so excited at the positive feedback laser dentistry has brought to our office. Please contact us today if you would like more information about this procedure or if you would like to schedule an appointment with us.
