The summer is over and schools are back in session but are your children’s teeth ready? According to the American Dental Association, more than 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental disease. At Great Neck and Mid-Island Dental Associates we help to get them back on track. Below are some helpful tips that can help you keep your children’s teeth happy and healthy throughout the school year.

1. Plan out healthy snacks and lunches that are packed with high-calcium dairy products such as cheese and milk, foods that are highin fiber such as spinach and beans and fruits and vegetables such as strawberries and broccoli.

2. Replenish your dental supplies. Make sure to swap out your old toothbrushes and check the expiration date on your toothpaste. Try to get your kids into the habit of flossing by setting up a rewards program and make sure to stick with it. Every time they floss, they get an extra 15 minutes of playtime or something to that will keep them excited.

3. Set up regular dental visits. Every 6 months you and your children should schedule an appointment to have your teeth checked out and cleaned. It’s important to schedule regular checkups to diagnose, treat or prevent dental problems.
