Difference between Immediate and Conventional Dentures

Dentures can be of two main types: conventional and immediate. Although both of these are effective, there are a few key differences between the two to keep in mind.

Conventional Dentures

These are fully detachable dentures that can be worn as soon as extraction is over, and the gum tissue has healed. Similarly, a removable partial denture that may or may not be fitted with clasp retention may also be called a conventional denture.

In general, conventional dentures refer to a full set of dentures when all the teeth have been removed. A common issue with conventional dentures (especially with elderly patients) is that inadequate bone structure may affect lower denture retention. Dentures and partials are often fabricated with special attachments, frameworks, or implants in which case, they’re considered as ‘non-conventional’ dentures.

Ask our knowledgeable dental team at Great Neck Dental Associates about our range of modern dentures and partials for every patient.

Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures can be used after extractions. These not only help stop bleeding but also shape the healing gum and surrounding tissue. They serve as temporary teeth, so the patient does not have to struggle without teeth after an extraction procedure.

However, since gum tissue and bones shrink over time, immediate dentures may require more adjustments for a comfortable fit.
